Atlantic City Casino Thief Escapes Incarceration
The individual who stole from a winner at an Atlantic City casino will not be incarcerated.
Robert Reed, 51, from Newark, N.J., will instead make a restitution payment of $2,500 to the victim, as stated in a recent sentence.
The robbery occurred in the parking garage of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Atlantic City in March 2023.
Reed and the victim initially encountered each other on the casino floor. The victim had won $20,000 during a poker game. Reed informed his target that he required a lift after failing to catch a public bus. The victim consented, and the two entered the garage.
Reed struck the man on the head with a wine bottle. He sustained injuries that were not specified. Reed then took $10K and personal belongings from the victim.
During the court proceedings, State Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Wilson reduced the sum Reed needs to pay since he couldn't afford the stolen amount, which was $10K, as reported by NJ.com, a local news source.
In May, Reed was convicted of robbery, aggravated assault, theft, and weapons-related crimes. The report indicated that he could have received a 10-year prison sentence.
If Reed successfully finishes his probationary period, his criminal record will be expunged of the charges.
Reed's case was assigned to a recovery court, which is a program designed for convicts dealing with substance abuse issues. He was freed from detention in December.
